Environmental Science Surveillance Field Intern

Job Description:

The goal of the internship is to give an undergraduate student exposure to working in the field and doing insect surveillance. The environmental science intern will work with the lab manager to perform adult mosquito surveillance field work in Davis County. Will oversee the setting up and monitoring of several varieties of mosquito traps. Will work with the lab manager to ensure proper identification of mosquitoes and other insects found in traps. Will have the opportunity to work on a specific mosquito related research project.

Basic Duties:

  • Assist in the identification and cataloging of mosquito trap collections.
  • Assist in running the adult mosquito surveillance field program.
  • Help maintain accurate records.
  • Provide regular reports on mosquito activity in traps.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants should be a current undergraduate student working on completing their degree in a biological field or related field. With a desire to improve on their laboratory skills and gain practical experience. Along with having the following qualifications:
  • Have a valid Utah driver’s license.
  • Obtain a non-commercial pesticide applicators license from the Utah Department of Agriculture.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Attention to details.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.


Job Duration:

Early May through August, 40 hours/week, Monday to Friday, 6 am to 2 pm.

Work Environment:

This role requires you to be able to work in both the lab and field environments, where you may be standing or siting for an extended period. The role will be using regular office equipment as well as specialized mosquito traps.
